2001

Soil recycling EOIs to be called within two months

The Government says it will call for expressions of interest to establish soil recycling facilities within two months, with industry capability registration by the end of June and consultation beginning next month.  A web site will be established and the Minister and the Hazardous Waste Consultative Committee will inspect European facilities in late July. (17 June)

Waste policy "unproven and risky"

The Opposition has labelled Government moves to establish above-ground toxic waste storage dumps in Victoria as premature and potentially dangerous, and declined to join the Hazardous Waste Siting Advisory Committee, a recently formed committee to identify new sites around Victoria. (26 Mar)

2000

Policy aims to end hazardous waste landfill

The Government has announced an "action plan", under which "hazardous waste landfills will become obsolete in favour of greater re-use, recycling and recovery of hazardous waste". (8 Dec)

1999

Measures, Committee, to reduce hazardous waste landfill

The Victorian Government has announced measures to reduce hazardous waste going to landfill by 50% over the next ten years, along with the establishment of a bi-partisan Hazardous Waste Consultative Committee. (3 Feb)

2001

The Government is holding six public information sessions in metropolitan and regional areas on soil treatment and recycling facilities.   (1 Aug)

The Minister for Major Projects has criticised the Opposition's decision not to join the Hazardous Waste Siting Advisory Committee. (28 Mar)

2000

The Minister for Environment and Conservation has launched EcoRecycle Victoria's Waste Wise Business Business Kit, referring to the passage of the Environment Protection (Enforcement and penalties) Bill which imposes a levy on all materials going to landfill. (2 June)

The Minister for Environment and Conservation is inviting community input on the report of the Hazardous Waste Consultative Committee. (1 June)

1999

The Government will provide $440,000 to promote waste reduction in the industrial and business sectors through 5 proposals approved by EcoRecycle Victoria. (17 Dec)

The Government has reconvened the Hazardous Waste Consultative Committee, directing it to report by the end of February. (6 Dec)

The Minister for Conservation and Land Management, Mrs Marie Tehan, has announced State Government support of $4.15 million to regional and metropolitan areas to upgrade waste management infrastructure. (16 Aug)

The Government has announced $1 million of funding in 15 grants allocated to projects that developed new products using recycled materials and others that helped improve recycling infrastructure. (15 Jan)

The Environmental Protection Agency has documents on Industrial Waste Management Policies, Industrial/Biomedical Waste and Landfills, an Industry page, and the Government's Dec 2000 Future Directions policy with links including the Hazardous Waste Consultative Committee's  Final Report [pdf] and Government Response [pdf]. Ecorecycle Victoria, established by the State Government in 1996, "your information source for sustainable waste management and waste minimization"

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment web site includes Victorian Resources Online, an evolving section but which has maps, statistics and text on matters such as water, soil and land conditions and climate.

The Victorian Government's Land Channel includes extensive information on natural resource management and VicMap Display, a digital map base for Victoria.  Currently it shows the road network and  property information like parcel size, boundaries and easements.

Western Region Environment Council, including the Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dumps site.
