State Government Launches Millennium Bug Campaign
The Victorian Government recently announced a series of measures to assist businesses in addressing the problems arising from the Millennium Bug (Y2K). Small Business Victoria has published a freely available booklet, The Millennium Bug. Step on it! and further information is available from the free call hotline at 1800 11 2000 and the Government' Y2K website at www.y2k.dsd.vic.gov.au. Although the date January 1, 2000 is critically important, the problem may manifest itself sooner, as any computer function involving future dates, such as calculations of interest payments and mortgages, market forecasts and use-by dates is also likely to be affected. The bug may affect computer systems and any other device that contains an embedded chip, such as electronic equipment and machinery, cash registers, telephone and answering machines, faxes, building security systems and EFTPOS terminals.
