Melbourne's new riverside park

Planning has commenced on Melbourne’s new riverside park adjoining the new Federation Square. The park will take in the areas bordered by the new extension of Exhibition Street and Melbourne Park on the East, Federation Square to the North and West and the Yarra River on the South.

The Park will cover a total of 8.3 hectares, of which 6.1 is reclaimed railway yards. The remainder will be realised from the closure of Batman Avenue between Melbourne Park and Princes Bridge, which will allow the Park to extend to the water’s edge.

A design brief has been devised and a design is at present being produced by the City of Melbourne, LAB and Bates Smart Architects.

It is anticipated that construction will begin in mid-1999, with the Park’s opening to coincide with that of Federation Square, in 2001.
