Driving Instructors to be registered

The Road Safety (Driving Instructors) Bill will require professional driving instructors to possess stipulated minimum skills and knowledge and be of ‘good character.’

The Bill proposes a series of accreditation and quality checks of instructors which will include the following:

  • Holding a current full driver’s licence
  • Satisfying fitness/propriety checks, including those related to criminal, drink driving and traffic offences
  • Minimum eyesight standards
  • Successfully completing an approved driver training course
  • Providing photographic identification, name and registration on the dashboard of their vehicles whilst conducting lessons.

An industry code of practice will support the introduction of driving instructor standards. This will address customer service, cleanliness and roadworthiness of vehicles, customer complaints and zero blood alcohol levels.
