One thousand jobs are expected be created, including almost 600 in country areas, during the next two years as a result of the decision by Postel to expand its call centre operations.

The Minister for Information Technology and Multimedia, Mr Stockdale, said Postel would establish a call centre in Bendigo, creating up to 400 direct new jobs, and expand its Melbourne call centre in King Street to employ an additional 200 people.

The company will open another two call centres, employing up to 400 staff, in regional Victoria within the next 18 months.

Postel is Australia's fourth largest call centre operator, which currently provides call centre facilities for the telecommunications industries as well as charities and utilities.

Positions for the expanded Melbourne and new Bendigo call centres will be advertised in November.
