The Treasurer, Mr. Stockdale, has restated State Government policy to retain Government ownership of the water industry, in responding to attempts to link improved valuation of water assets to privatisation.

"The Kennett Government's policy, now and for the future, is against water industry privatisation," Mr Stockdale said.

The Treasurer said the State Government was committed to keeping the water industry in Government hands, retaining its responsibility to manage assets at the highest level of public accountability.

He said a proposed review of water valuation practices, as advertised in national print media two weeks ago, was necessary to ensure consistency of assessment across Victoria's water industry.

"The Government is continuing the drive for a more efficient Victorian, government-owned water industry. A common approach to valuing assets is necessary to allow Victorians to accurately compare one authority with another."
