Tourism to go online

The State Government will spend $7.4 million over the next two years to market Victoria online and give all the state’s tourism operators the opportunity to have their wares and attractions featured around the globe on the world wide web.

The idea is to enable international and interstate visitors and Victorians to view, book and pay for their Victorian holidays over the Internet by 2002.

It is estimated that currently less than 5.0% of Victorian tourism product is fully on line.

The plan will:

  • Establish and market a major Melbourne/Victoria website linked to many specialist sites featuring major events and attractions.
  • Make all Melbourne and regional Victoria’s tourist information available through this website.
  • Encourage all the State’s tourism products to be available on line for both information and bookings.
  • Put Tourism Victoria’s advisory and other services to the tourism industry on the Internet.
  • Progressively connect online the State’s Visitor Information Centres to Tourism Victoria to allow regional Victoria to directly assess the information and marketing resources of Tourism Victoria.

People from all over the world will be able to look at exactly what Victoria has to offer and book their holidays or be directly referred to their travel agent with the click of a button.

The plan’s first stage involves a partnership between the Government and Victoria’s tourism industry to train, educate and collate a massive amount of tourist information.

The "jigsaw" campaign will continue to be promoted aggressively over the coming years.
