$103m Budget funding for TAFEs

The State Government has committed itself to additional funding of $103 million over four years to expand vocational education and training.

$93.8 million will be provided over the next four years to create training opportunities for 50,000 young people in Melbourne and throughout Victoria.

Of this, $18.1 million will be provided in 1999-2000, $23.1 million in 2000-2001 and $26.3 million for each of the next two years.

Victoria already has, according to the Australian National Training Authority, Australia’s highest participation rate in vocational education and training and the highest employer satisfaction rate.

In the last year, the number of apprenticeships and traineeships in Victoria jumped by 30%.

In addition, a total of 10 projects will receive State Government capital works funding of $23.6 million.

They are:

Victoria University of Technology - TAFE Division     $6.6 million

Box Hill TAFE - Whitehorse Campus                          $1.7 million

Chisholm TAFE - Berwick Campus                             $2.2 million

Chisholm TAFE - Frankston Campus                           $2.7 million

Chisholm TAFE - Wonthaggi Campus                          $1.4 million

        Wodonga TAFE                                                          $1.1 million

        Kangan Batman TAFE                                                 $1.6 million

Bendigo TAFE - Echuca Campus                                 $3.3 million

University of Ballarat - TAFE Division                           $1.0 million

$2.0 million will go to expand the communications infrastructure for rural and regional TAFE institutes.

The $2-million expansion of communication infrastructure will lead to an increase in the range of courses available to people in country Victoria and ensure that telecommunication costs are similar for country and metropolitan institutes.

Other initiatives in the Budget include:

  • $7.1 million over three years for the Information Technology and Chip Skills Project. The project is designed to support the development of the semiconductor design and manufacturing industry in Victoria.
  • $2.4 million over two years for the extension of the successful Youth Employment Initiative (YEI). This extension will provide 1100 young Victorians aged between 16 and 20 the opportunity to undertake a one-year full-time traineeship involving on and off the job training.
