Progress on gas inter-connections
Work to upgrade the Victoria-NSW gas interconnect to deliver extra gas supplies for winter has been completed. New compressors have trebled the pipelines capacity from 30 to 92 terajoules a day, about 10% of the States peak winter gas needs. The interconnect is a joint venture between Transmission Pipelines Australia and East Australia Pipelines, connecting the NSW system south of Wagga Wagga with Victorias high-pressure gas transmission network near Barnawartha, west of Wodonga. Built last year at a cost of $50 million, the interconnect was the first pipeline connecting Australias major south-eastern gas markets and supply sources. New compressors have been commissioned at Springhurst in Victoria and Bulla Park in NSW to provide extra supply. Gas through the interconnect provided supplies for essential services during Victorias gas emergency last year. The new South West Pipeline, being built from Port Campbell to Lara, will provide another 10% of Victorias peak winter needs. The South West Pipeline is expected to deliver 100 terajoules a day from the Otway Basin following completion in June, and will have a capability of 200 terajoules a day. The Western Underground Gas Storage at Port Campbell, also due for completion in June, will provide 60 terajoules a day increasing to 200 terajoules a day in 2000.
