Byzantine heritage goes on display
Victorians will have the opportunity to see examples of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art in a new exhibition at Melbournes Hellenic Antiquities Museum. The Ceremony and Faith: Byzantine Art and the Divine Liturgy exhibition features icons, vestments and other liturgical objects dating back to the 10th century from six museums across Greece. The collection is rare and of great historical and religious significance. The Hellenic Antiquities Museum was opened in November 1998 following an agreement between the Greek and Victorian governments. The exhibition will run until September 26, 1999. The Hellenic Antiquities Museum is the only Australian museum to showcase the exhibition. (News Release, Office of the Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs, May 24, 1999)
