Revised Data Protection Bill
The State Government has introduced its Data Protection Bill into Parliament. The Data Protection Bill is part of the Governments program for privacy, data protection and electronic commerce. The State Government revised its legislative plans to recognise the Federal Governments action to develop national laws covering these issues. The Minister for Information Technology and Multimedia, Alan Stockdale, said that the State Government had always supported national legislation as its preferred option in data protection and e-commerce and would modify its approach in light of Federal progress. Mr Stockdale said that, if the Federal Government enacted suitable legislation to cover the private sector, the Victorian Act would only apply to the public sector. The State will continue to assist the development of a national data protection framework and adopt the agreed national model to ensure consistency.
