Ministers and MPs to retire

 

The Premier, Mr Kennett, has announced that details of Ministers and Government MPs who intend to retire at the next State election.

Ministers who have decided to retire are:

  • Deputy Leader and Minister for Education, Phil Gude.
  • National Party Deputy Leader and Minister for Police, Corrections and Emergency Services, Bill McGrath.
  • The Minister for Sport and Rural Development, Tom Reynolds.
  • Treasurer, Alan Stockdale.
  • The Minister for Conservation and Land Management, Marie Tehan and
  • Attorney General, Jan Wade.

Six members of the Parliamentary Liberal Party will also retire. They are:

  • The Parliamentary Secretary of the Cabinet, Rosemary Varty.
  • The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Jim Plowman.
  • The Member for Ballarat West, Paul Jenkins.
  • The Member for Ballarat Province, Dick De Fegeley.
  • The Member for Polwarth, Ian Smith.
  • The Member for Eumemmerring Province, Ron Wells.

"All Ministers and members will continue to serve in their current positions until the next election to fulfil their contracts with the people of Victoria," the Premier said.

"I will personally miss them as colleagues and friends but I am excited by the orderly renewal that these retirements offer my team.

"We have a large number of talented and experienced younger members of Parliament whom I have been encouraging and training so they have the skills necessary to assume leadership positions in the new millennium," he said.
