Increased investment in agricultural R&D

The State Government has announced details of its $47.5-million Growing Horizons research and development program for agriculture.

Through the program, the Government hopes to assist farmers and food processors to triple the size of the State’s food and agriculture exports to $12 billion by 2010.

The program represents a 32% increase in agricultural research and development.

Benefits expected from the research program include

  • increases in the scale and intensity of dairy production.
  • new areas opened up for horticulture using water-efficient irrigation technology.
  • Gene technology to increase grain yields, improve weed management and promote minimum tillage.
  • Lower-cost meat production through improved pasture and utilisation.
  • Realisation of wool-customer demands through improved product specification and differentiation.
