A new wetlands for south-east Melbourne

The Premier, Mr Kennett, has opened the Karkarook Park wetlands, part of an $8-million project to create a new recreation reserve for Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.

When Karkarook Park is completed it will comprise parklands, picnic areas, the wetlands and a recreational lake. The lake will cover 20 hectares and provide for a range of activities including non-powered boating. The lake is expected to be completed in 2001 and should be full by 2003-2004.

The wetlands will act as a filtration system cleaning storm water from surrounding urban areas through man-made litter traps, while wetland plants will reduce dissolved nutrients flowing into Port Phillip Bay.

It is expected that Karkarook Park will have some 250,000 visitors each year.

The creation of the wetland park is a Clean Up Australia 2001 project.
