New gas retailer in Victoria
Queensland energy supplier, Energex, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Allgas Energy Ltd, has become a new gas retailer in Victoria through purchase of rights to the "gas release program" for $29.25 million. The contract will allow Energex to purchase 10 petajoules of gas per year, with a maximum daily quantity of 34 terajoules, from the States wholesale gas supplier, Gascor. Release gas will become available on October 1, 1999 and will be available until December 31, 2003. Energex is the second-largest retailer of energy products and services in the Australian energy market. It last year acquired Allgas Energy Ltd, which services 88,000 gas customers. The company supplies Safeway, National Foods and Lend Lease in Victoria and is the major electricity retailer in Queensland, with more than one million customers. Energex has obtained licences required to trade electricity and to retail to contestable customers in Victoria, NSW and South Australia. (News Release, Office of the Treasurer, June 23, 1999)
