Savings through Treasury Reserve refurbishment
The Treasury Reserve Precinct has been transformed from an under-utilised and largely derelict facility, to a centre of Victorian Government administration that is producing multi-million dollar savings for taxpayers, the Premier, Mr Kennett, has said. Mr Kennett was commenting on claims by the Opposition that the cost of refurbishment works at the precinct had blown out by $8 million. "Under Labor the buildings at 1 Treasury Place and 1 Macarthur Street were largely disused, outdated and riddled with dangerous asbestos," Mr Kennett said. "When the Coalition Government was elected in 1992, we sought to immediately bring down the wasteful costs of Labor by removing public servants and Ministers from expensive rented offices and into state owned buildings at the Treasury Reserve." Mr Kennett said the consolidation of Government accommodation would deliver a saving of $26.7 million per annum. "Treasury Reserve is not simply a place for Ministers and public servants. It is a precinct that presents a positive image of public administration to the general public, our international visitors and potential investor," Mr Kennett concluded.
