Y2K readiness near

Victorian Government agencies are within 1.6% of achieving full Y2K readiness with about five months to go before the year 2000.

"Average completion of Y2K readiness projects across the public sector is 98.36%," the Minister for Finance, Robert Hallam, said.

"On average, the work remaining to be done represents less than 2% of the total activity required the public sector to be ready for the new millennium.

"In all but a few cases there are acceptable reasons why some agencies are behind. There are a number of greenfields solutions, particularly in health, where new systems will be in place in plenty of time," he said.

"Our efforts have now changed focus to reporting those ‘exceptions’; they are the agencies that did not reach 100% Y2K readiness by June 30," Mr Hallam said.

Those agencies that had not completed their preparations by the deadline are to remain under Cabinet’s scrutiny until they have been certified as Y2K ready.

Contingency planning is now also close to completion, at 96.43%.
