Victorian exports growing
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicate that Victorias exports increased to a record high over the last financial year. The Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Mark Birrell said that, while exports from the rest of Australia dropped by 4% during 1998-99, Victorias rose by 4%. Mr Birrell said that Victoria had recorded a 73% increase in exports between 1991-92 and 1998-99, the highest export growth of any Australian state. The greatest growth came in the field of elaborately transformed manufactures, which recorded an increase of 109% over the seven-year period. In that time, Victoria also doubled its exports of automotive products, equipment and pharmaceuticals. In 1998-99 alone, Victoria exported $4-billion worth of food, including $1.9 billion in dairy products. (News Release, Office of the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, July 29, 1999)
