$9m funding for urban facelifts
The Minister for Planning and Local Government, Mr Robert Maclellan, has launched Pride of Place 1999-2000, a $9 million program to improve Victorias cities, towns and suburban centres. Pride of Place encourages a partnership between State Government, councils and local communities to identify and facilitate new urban design projects and business, social and cultural possibilities. The program targets public areas of urban centres and their relationship with private land uses and buildings, and aims at transforming and renewing Victorias urban centres and promoting healthy, attractive, secure and productive environments. Applications for the 1999-2000 program are now invited from councils across Victoria. Community and business organisations may also develop funding proposals with their local councils. Funding will be available for urban design advice, design frameworks, design development and associated major capital works. Developments and projects taking place in stages over several years will also attract funding. Councils can take advantage of their Municipal Strategic Statements to identify suitable Pride of Place projects. More than half of Pride of Place funds will be allocated to regional Victoria.
