Support for Royal Exhibition Building World Heritage listing

3 April, 2001

The Letters Editor
The Age
250 Spencer Street
MELBOURNE VIC 3000

Dear Editor

Julianne Bell states that the then Premier, Jeff Kennett, opposed nominating the Royal Exhibition Building for World Heritage listing (Opinion, 2/4).

Premier Kennett did not support such a nomination in 1997, lest it should impede construction of the Melbourne Museum.

However, it was also Premier Kennett who in 1999 undertook to initiate a World Heritage listing application, as part of the Liberal Party’s election policy Building Victoria’s Future.

The State Opposition continues to support such listing.

Yours sincerely

Robert Clark MP
Shadow Minister for Planning.
