New system for builders’ skills recognition

A new Domestic Builders’ Registration System has been established for domestic builder registration.

The new system will recognise the skills gained through on-the-job practical experience as well as those gained through education and formal training.

Independent assessors accredited by and accountable to the Building Practitioners’ Board (BPB) will carry out the assessments.

A standard fee of $400 will apply for each assessment, as recommended by the BPB. The fee will cover the cost of paying the assessors who will operate on a contract basis.

As part of the BPB’s auditing and quality-assurance process, a proportion of applicants will be assessed using the full range of assessment techniques, although the applicant will not incur any additional charge.

An unsuccessful applicant will have access to the quick and inexpensive appeals process operated by the Building Appeals Board.
