Y2K compliance on track
The latest report on public-sector preparation for the Millennium Bug shows that, over the past month, preparedness has risen from 92% to 94%. Government agencies have also increased their level of contingency planning from 72% to 77%. The monthly report shows the progress of all State departments, agencies and statutory authorities as well as local government and privatised electricity and gas companies. All participants have until June 30 to comply, to allow six months of thorough testing and preparation for next year. A number of agencies are adopting so-called "greenfield" solutions in which the June 30 deadline is not strictly applicable because the agencies are installing new, Y2K-compliant systems rather than testing and upgrading existing systems. The Minister for Finance, Roger Hallam, said: "We expect that a small number of agencies will not reach the deadline and we are investigating measures to deal with those cases. This may include stripping responsibility from those who have failed to achieve compliance and handing it to external auditors." The latest report is available on the State Governments Y2K website (News Release, Office of the Minister for Finance, June 10, 1999)
